Investigation of psychological well-being and social media addiction in terms of marital satisfaction

Abstract (EN)
In this study, it is aimed to investigate the psychological well-being of individuals and social media addiction in terms of marital satisfaction. The sample of the study consisted of 398 married individuals living in Istanbul province aged between 20-65 years, including 270 women and 128 men who are selected by accidental sampling method. To collect data for this study; a personal information form containing demographic information;'Marital Satisfaction Scale' for the purpose of measuring the marriage satisfaction of individuals; 'Turkish Form of Psychological Well-Being Scale for Married Women and Men' to measure the level of psychological well being; and 'Social Media Addiction Scale' was used to determine the level of social media addiction. The data obtained in the study is analyzed via using the SPSS 25.0 program. In the comparison of quantitative data in scales with normal distribution; Independent Group t Test was used for the difference between the two groups, and One-Way Variance analysis was used to compare the averages of more than two groups. Bonferroni binary comparison which is one of the Post-Hoc tests was used to find the group that makes a difference between their averages. In the comparison of quantitative data, Mann Whitney U test were used for the difference between the two groups for scales that do not have normal distribution and Kruskal Wallis-H analysis was used in comparing the averages of more than two groups, Spearman correlation analysis was applied to test the relationship between the scales and sub-dimensions used in the research. Simple regression analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of social media addiction and psychological well-being on marital satisfaction. According to the research findings, while marital satisfaction does not differ according to the age, the educational status of the spouse, the number and the type of marriage;but differ significantly according to gender, educational status, employment status and perceived economic status.While the level of psychological well-being does not differ significantly depending on the level of education, the number of and type of marriage; it differs according to age, gender, employment status and perceived economic levels. While social media addiction does not differ significantly by gender, level of education, level of employment, perceived economic income, spouse's employment status, number and type of marriage; it shows a significant difference by age. As a result of the correlation analysis, a positive correlation was found between marital satisfaction level and psychological well-being and social media addiction level. A positive correlation was found between the level of psychological well-being and social media addiction. As a result of the regression analysis, it was concluded that 42.2% of the change on marital satisfaction explained by the psychological well- being while social media addiction did not change the marital satisfaction. However, it is seen that virtual tolerance had a positive effect on marital satisfaction.
