Personal stories and the problematic of expression

During the history, all fields of the art have had individualization processes. Painting is oneof the branches of art that may have had that individualization process most clearly. Theculture of the medieval times which was based on religion and its pressure on individualswhich affected the arts as being against objectivity is an important example. The orderedpaintings which were affected intensively from the religious themes had negative effectson the painter?s attempt on creating his-her own concepts and finding personal expressionways.At the 18th century, in addition to the changes on production styles and in intellectualglobes, the development of romanticism in arts had impacts on the improvement onindividualism on images and expression in arts.Romanticism and a continuity of enlightenment process, in the 19th century due to theattempts to find new ways for expression, the aim of the art has been converted to addingartists? own concepts and internalization to his-her paintings. The distinction between theartist and craftsman has become clear.From the beginning of the 20th century, a new process in which the effectiveness of mindand more experimental have started that improves personal lookouts. Expressionism as abasis of personal expressions has been effected on expressing personal stories, emotionsand thoughts. On that process, concepts such as objectivity, creativity and purity becamedominant on arts.The aim of this thesis is to explain briefly the personal expressions and stories on arts andespecially paintings, from a historical perspective and to point out the reasons, analyze thetopic by using different examples and to frame the work that had been done during thethesis process.Keywords: İndividuality - Personal Stories.
