The Values produced and converted into life by mankind throught the epoces have consisted of his cultural presence. In creation and development of these cultural presence there is continuty that has been provided by producing and consuming of these values. It is possible to come across far rich varieties of the handicrafts in our country that has become a centre for number of civilisations survived in the Anatolia.There is significant importance of the hand knitted socks studied within the scope of knitting involved in among these handicrafts. The socks, which have different appearances by regions exhibit the must beatiful samples of hand knitting. It is observed that the studies relevant to the hand knitting socks that are still continuing are not sufficiently investigated. This study was planned and implemented for the aim to put forward the technical features, tools and aguipment, and the motifs of the hand knitted soks in the area of the Bitlis province and the Tatvan sub-prefecture, and to impart a contemporary dimension by creating new designs. Statistical processes of the inguiries implemented in the region were performed, and converted into diagrams, and construed. Individual pictures of the sock samples determined were taken, and the color drawings and analysis of each sample sock were performed in accordance with their pattern features. The new designs of these patterns obtained from these sock samples were converted into products, other thain their field of use.341 Today, synthetic treads are preferred while wool treads whit five knitting needles were used as a tool in the area of Bitlis Province. The simple knitting, the knitting with designs and colour patterns, and the embrodery are used as the knitting technigue. It was observed that the knitting technigue of colour-patterns and of embrodery wasused in 64 and 13 of total 77 sock samples, respectively, The kniting technigue used in the region is to start from the leg of, and to complete the nose of soks. It was observed that five different kinds of decoration, geometric.floral, symbolic and material were used in the soks, and it was determined that the motifs used within the region were exhibited similarity with that of other regions. More than one composition form was come across in the socks, but longitudinal composition was extensively used. Using the old samples they knit the hand knitting socks was observed, and they preserved the feature of pattern motifs. Based on this concept, it was determined that the sock knitting in Bitlis province is the handicraft dated back from generation, and was implemented to meet the need of individuals as well as bride's dowry. In the sock knitting that is an important part of our culture having traditional feature, it was aimed to impart a new dimension by producing its various designs as to be evaluated other than its field of use ( clohing, decoration) from another viewpoint in line with technologial development, without deterioration the features of the determined patterns and motifs based on thedata obtained from this study in the Bitlis region. Therefore, six designs were prepared, and three of them were applied in the field of clotting by using different technigue, materials and tools. In all stages of these products, an aesthetical and contemporary approach was employed together with utmost fastidious, and was provided guidance for further studies. «&&* 661*^^*
