Abstract (EN)

CO-GASIFICATION OF OIL SHALE AND PLASTIC WASTES( M.Sc. Thesis )Ahmed Abdullah GAFURGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYOctober 2006ABSTRACTThis research planned to develop a suitable technology for co-gasification of oil shale and plastic wastes to produce syngas has beenperformed.Firstly, lab-scale fluidized bed gasifier system has been set up andgasification experiments have been realized in this system. In theexperiments, sand was used as bed material. Two different Turkish oilshale (Seyitömer and Himmetoğlu) and mixed plastic waste (56 % ofpolyethylene, 28 % of polypropilene, 16 % of polystyrene) were gasifiedin the fluidized bed gasifier system. The effects of oil shale type and mixed plastic wastes, steam flow rates, the ratio of feed mixture and gasification temperatures wereinvestigated on co-gasification products (syngas). The optimumfluidization velocity was determined to be kept close to the minimumfluidization velocity.Except for nitrogen and oxygen, co-gasification efficiencies for allsubstances (hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide)were determined. All the experiments indicated that percentage ofmethane was observed higher than the others (about 25 % (v/v) ofhydrogene and 75 % (v/v) of methane) in the gas product mixture. Theoptimum operating temperature was found to be 8000C.Science Code : 912.1.038Key Words : Co-gasification, oil shale, plastic wastes.Page Number : 89Adviser : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ö. Murat DOĞAN
