REMOVAL OF COMBUSTIBLE SULPHUR IN COAL BY BIOCHEMICAL METHOD (M. Sc. Thesis) Meltem Çubuk GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 1999 ABSTRACT Petroleum crisis during the last years have increased the significance of researches on cool that can supply the energy requirement for long period with existing reservoirs through the world. Although there are high lignite reservoirs in our country, high sulphur content limits the efficient use of them. Particularly, lignite consumption in thermal power plants leads to air pollution due to combustion products S02 and S03. Air pollution is one of the most vital problem of this century. If necessary precautions are not taken, it will threaten the future of human being. In this respect, for the consistency of industrial specifications, combustible sulphur removal researches have been performed with coal samples used in Çayırhan Thermal Power Plant. Experiments have been carried out with 20 % solution of coal samples that have approximate gram size of 0,106 mm, dried at 105 °C and have total sulphur content of 3,24 %. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans bacteria that are efficient in the removal of combustible sulphur incoal at approximate room temperatures were used together and sugar beet molasses was tested as bacterial food. The study was performed in two stages. In the first stage, these bacteria were generated. Then with the generated bacteria, it was tried to determine the optimum conditions giving the maximum efficiency for the removal of combustible sulphur in coal. The maximum efficiency for the removal of combustible sulphur was obtained as 78,2 % under the following optimum conditions; addition 5 % Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, 5 % Thiobacillus thiooxidans to coal solution, 0,2 g melas/g coal change, pH value of 3 at shaking rate of 70 rpm and at 40 °C at the end of 7 days.
