Biomass is the common name of all non-fossilized biological material procured from living or recently living organisms. The structure of biomass consists mix of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen. Global warming, pollution and the rapid depletion of non-renewable resources are the issues that need to be solved today. Biomass is a renewable energy source which generates heat, electricity and fuel using different conversion methods therefore biomass is an organic alternative to provide solutions to these problems. Thermochemical conversion technologies such as gasification, pyrolysis and biochemical conversion technologies such as anaerobic digestion, fermentation are used to procure bioproduct from biomass. The thesis focuses on the location selection for a biomass to energy plants to enhance a sustainable biomass supply chain. The type of location selection problem includes economic, environmental, social and technical decision factors. Within the scope of this thesis, a decision support system has been developed by using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping method (FCM) to establish the relationship between these decision factors. A preliminary thesis was conducted in which biomass supply chain experts are interviewed to reveal the relationship between decision factors. The findings obtained from expert opinions were solved in a MATLAB based FCM decision support algorithm. At the end of the thesis, scenario analysis is conducted in order to better understand the relationship between decision factors.
