Abstract (EN)

This thesis, firstly, aims to present a comprehensive literature review on sustainability of biomass supply chain. Within the scope of the literature research, previous literature reviews on sustainable biomass supply chain are analyzed to present more detailed information about the scope, scheme, and gaps on the field. The differences and the shortcomings of the existed literature are revealed and important aspects are displayed. A classification scheme is proposed by investigating the previous literature reviews and the previous quantitative papers are examined according to this classification scheme. According to this classification scheme, sustainability dimensions in the previous papers are analyzed in detailed in terms of economic, environmental and social aspects. Then, solution methodologies employed in these papers are analyzed. Bioenergy generations and sustainability evaluations captured in previous papers are also investigated. A novel multi-stage solution methodology and multi-objective mixed integer linear programming model is developed to solve sustainable biomass supply chain network design problem with a real case study. The real case study is about electrical energy generation by using poultry farm wastes in İzmir region. In the first stage, geographic information system is used to determine suitable locations to establish biogas facilities under environmental constraints. In the second stage, environmentally suitable locations, obtained by geographic information systems, is improved and reduced by using analytical hierarchy process method. Then, multi-objective mixed integer linear programming model is developed with the aim of maximizing total profit and minimizing total distance of entire supply chain.
