Researching the effect of the 5E learning model and cooperative learning metod on academic achivement and attitude in biology lesson

The aim of this study is to research the effect of the 5E learning model and cooperative learning metod on academic achivement and attitude in biology lesson.Pretest ? posttest control group real experimental model has been used in this study. In 2010-2011 school year 93 students who were in 3nd grade science field at Ankara Çankaya Milli Piyango Anadolu High School constituted the work group of the study. ?Heredity, Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology? unit were worked by 5E learning model at 1th experimental group, by cooperative learning at 2th experimental group and by traditional teaching method at control group.The personal information questionnaire, biology attitude scale, achievement test have been used as data collection tool in this investigation. Experimental and control groups were formed by applying personal information questionnaire for student grouping purpose. Data were collected by applying biology attitude scale and achievement test at the beginning and the end of the investigation. At the stage of the development of achievement test, test and item analyses were made. Exploratory factor analyses were used in the process of the development of 5E and coopetative learning assessment criteria.The one way ANOVA and Tukey test was used in the evaluation of the results of the initial and final tests to have independent samples. Mann Whitney U Test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Tests for Paired Samples were used in the comparation of initial and final tests achievement and attitude points according to students? gender. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences Program, Version 17.0) was used for data analysis.The following results were obtained from this study: It has been emphasised that there is a meaningful difference between 5E learning method and cooperative learning method with traditional learning. It has been proved that 5E learning method is the best education model in terms of academic achievements and the students? attitudes towards the biology lessons. Furthermore no differences neither in academic achievements and the students? attitudes towards the biology lessons has been observed according to student?s gender.Key words: Constructivist approach, cooperative learning , 5E learning model, biology teaching.
