Biomorphic emulation and its reflections on modern sculpture

This study investigates the origins of biomorphism terminology and examines its reflections on modern sculpture. Biomorphic movements have influenced artistic designs in terms of structure and form, shaping since the Mesolithic period with humans' emulation of nature. Artists in the modern era have carried the effects of biomorphism to the present day by referencing these primitive styles. The emergence of scientific discoveries and natural phenomena in the twentieth century has highlighted the relationship between art and science, aiding in our understanding of connections between form and structure. While biomorphism is addressed in various disciplines such as anthropology, political science, philosophy, and art, it has not been extensively explored in the context of sculpture within the Turkish literature. Throughout history, artists have continually reinterpreted natural imagery both conceptually and formally, exploring ways to transform natural structures and forms into artistic expressions. Some artists have sought to reinterpret nature not only visually but also through in-depth analysis, engaging all senses in the process of reinterpretation. This research focuses on artists who adopt a biomorphic style in depicting nature, the universe, or reality. It is observed that the biomorphic style finds its place in movements such as art nouveau, abstract art, and surrealism. The study investigates the forms in which artists who embrace this style utilize natural imagery and explores their motivations for doing so. Furthermore, it seeks to elucidate what artists aim to convey through their depictions of nature and how they interpret these images. The research aims to present an analysis of formal and semantic constructs across different periods, thereby examining the position of biomorphism in art from various perspectives.
