A comparative authenticity analysis of civil architecture in bosphorus coastline: Beylerbeyi and Cengelkoy

Bosphorus can called as the starting point of traditional dwelling architecture which the timber material is used for the whole structure. Although it was forbidden because of the major fires in the city, timber was the most common material yet in the late 19th century, due to its standardization, low fares, being easy to access and build. Bosphorus' changing process starts after 1920s by the end of timber construction productions. In the years following 1930s, the city management plans and shapes İstanbul according to motor vehicles. Inevitably, that kind of urbanization activities transforms the Bosphorus coastline timber architecture dwellings and the culture. By the 10.10.1970 – 5595 principles, Gayrimenkul Eski Eserler ve Anıtlar Yüksek Kurulu (High Council of Historical Monuments in Turkey) suggests sorting the Bosphorus yalis in 3 groups. This classification, though, is not very clear for the 2nd group of yali qualifications, conservation and application principles. The unclarity causes rapid degradation of the site. This thesis focuses the authenticity problem after 1970s. This study analyzed the authenticity of civil architecture in Bosphorus coastline, Beylerbeyi and Cengelkoy, consists of six chapters. In the first chapter, the boundary of the survey area is defined. The aim, the content and the method of the thesis are explained. In the second chapter, Bosphorus is described with its location and history. The development of the architectural features and characteristic of "The Bosphorus Civilization" is expressed. The impacts of technical and legitimate frame are told. The third chapter focused on the cultural heritage in Beylerbeyi and Cengelkoy coast lines. Apart from the traditional dwellings which are the main part of the study, the other structures that affects the identity of the area are described. In the fourth chapter, the concept of "authenticity and originality" is discussed. The authenticity and originality of architectural heritage and the related charters are explained. The fifth chapter examined the registered civil timber structures. The catalogs of the buildings are formed by the information of authenticity, comparing the past and present. In the catalogs, the character of floor plans, façades, physical form and ornaments, the preservation of materials and techniques, the authenticity of location and setting are analyzed. In the sixth chapter, the authenticity status of the Bosphorus coast line dwellings are discussed as a result. The reasons of degradations are evaluated.
