Boric acid is an element that is found in compounds in nature and has been shown in many areas. It is noteworthy for human and environment and it is economical since it is obtained naturally. This study was carried out to investigate the antibacterial activity of boric acid in vitro and disinfectant effectiveness on contaminated surfaces. Disinfectant efficacy of baric acid with different concentrations (1, 2, 4, 6%) against S. aureus ATCC 29213, E. coli ATCC 25922, P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853, E. faecalis ATCC 29212, S. mutans ATCC 25175 isolates and blood culture samples 20 different microorganisms with different resistance patterns against a total of 25 isolates (A. baumannii, P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, E. coli, S. aureus, S. epidermidis, E. faecalis C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, S. mitis / oralis) was investigated by qualitative suspension method and surface contamination. In the qualitative suspension method, different concentrations of boron material (1, 2, 4, 6) were contacted with selected bacteria for in 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 minutes. At the end of the contact times, neutralizing solution was added to stop the effects of the substances before planting, and then 5% sheep blood agar was planted. After 24 hours incubation, it was evaluated whether the bacteria were able to grow. For surface contamination, the tiles were spread on the surface with a 100 µL sterile swab of bacterial suspension prepared at a concentration of 0.5 MacFarland. It was waited for 15 minutes to dry. The dried surfaces were cleaned with 1%, 2, 4, 6% suspensions of boric acid using swab. After waiting for the surface to dry for 1-2 minutes, 5% sheep blood agar was sown after the sterile serum-saline swab was applied to the entire surface. Plates were incubated at 37 ° C for 24 hours. In each study, negative control surface (non-bacterial non-cultivated surface), positive control surface (bacterially cultivated, non-boric acid treated surface) and efficacy control surface (bacterially cultivated and 70% ethyl alcohol treated surface) Sowing was done after the procedure. In the qualitative suspension method, the efficacy of boric acid at a concentration of 1% and the times tested was not determined. It was found to be effective against most bacteria and all 10 minutes at 2% concentration with 5 minutes contact, from 5 minutes at 4% concentration and from 1 minute at 6% concentration. While there was no efficacy at 1% concentration in Candida species, it was found to be effective in all at 1% in 2% concentration. In surface contamination; It was found that boric acid had a disinfectant activity against all Candida species tested at 2% concentration and all bacteria tested at 6% concentration. Boric acid is an antimicrobial chemical that is effective against bacteria and Candida species even at low concentrations, and it is concluded that further studies are appropriate for its use for disinfection purposes.
