EFFECTS OF BORIC COMBINATIONS AND IMPREGNATIONPROCESS ON RESISTANCE OF HARDNESS AND ABRASION OFSOME WOODEN MATERIALS AND VARNISHES(M.Sc. Thesis)Mutlu SARICAGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYJuly 2006ABSTRACTIn this study, effects of boric combinations and impregnation process onresistance of hardness and abrasion of some wooden materials and varnisheswere investigated. In this purpose, specimens prepared from Oriental beech, oak without stalk, scotch pine and Uludağ fir were impregnated with boric acid, borax, and mixture of boric acid + borax by conforming to ASTM D 1413-99,Afterwards, synthetic, waterborne and acid-catalysed vanishes were applied tothose specimens according to ASTM D 3023. In specimens, resistance ofabrasion according to TS 4755 and resistance of hardness according to ASTM-D 4366 were tested.Consequently, the highest value of resistance of hardness was found inspecimens of Oriental Beech varnished with acid- catalysed and the lowest valuewas found in synthetic varnished scotch pine. It was observed that impregnationmaterials increased the resistance of hardness. In the test of abrasion, the highest value was found in specimens of East Beechimpregnated with the mixture of boric acid and borax, coated with acidcatalysed varnish. The lowest value was found in specimens of pine whichimpregnated with boric acid, with waterborne varnishes.Science Code : 711.3.023Key Words : Impregnation, boron compounds, oriental beech, oak, pine,Uludağ fir, hardness, abrasionPage Number : 52Adviser : Doç.
