Examination of the fear of missing out the developments, phubbing, personality and social commitment levels of the individuals who prefer using social media as leisure activity

The main aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the concepts of fear of missing out individuals, phubbing, personality on social commitment and the relationship between these concepts as a leisure activity. The universe of the study is the social media users with different demographic characteristics in the 17-77 age range in Turkey. 1026 (n = 470 males, n = 556 females) were reached to the participants who were selected by easy sampling method through the online questionnaire. Przybylski et al. (2013), developed by Gökler et al. (2016), a 10-item scale adapted to Turkish was used. For the determination of sociotelism levels, Montenegro et al. (2015) was developed by the 10-item scale was used. To determine personaly traits developed by Gosling et al. (2003) and translated in Turkish by Atak (2013). Data analyzed benefiting SPSS 22.0 and LISREL 8.8. program. In addition to descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to determine the differences according to the demographic variables of the participants. Tukey analysis was used to see which group caused the significant difference. When the results of the study were examined, it was found that individuals' fear of missing out developments, phubbing, personality and social commitment levels varied. In addition, as individuals' fear of missing out and phubbing increased, their levels of personality and social commitment decreased and thus negatively affected each other. The effect of fear of missing out and phubbing levels on each other was positive and the effect between personality and social commitment was positive.
