Abstract (EN)

Increasing concerns about the global warming and energy demand force scientists to find out new source of energy supply. Among possible energy sources, solar cells are promising candidates. Production costs unfortunately restrict the usage of these cells. Cheaper and environment friendly dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) appear to be successful alternatives to more widely used traditional semiconductor based designs. However, most people would agree that, there is still room for improvement for a few components of a typical DSSC. This is perhaps more apparent for the electrolyte, and the sensitizer dye component itself. In this study, we targeted novel Boradiazaindacene (Bodipy) sensitizers which were studied in two types of DSSCs; liquid electrolyte based (Gratzel type) and solid state DSSC. Six different sensitizers were synthesized and characterized. Effects of design and electrolyte type on solar light to electricity conversion efficiency were investigated. We have demonstrated that Bodipy dyes, through rational design, yield promising new materials in Gratzel type dye sensitized solar cells. Their applicability in solid state electrolyte regime offers additional opportunities for practical applications. Bodipy sensitizers hold significant promise as they can be derivatized as desired and the absorption peaks can be moved along the visible and near IR region.
