Investigation of cancer cases diagnosed between 2012-2019 at the pathology department of Bozok University Faculty of Medicine

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to study the characteristics, age, sex and the distribution of cancer cases diagnosed between the years 01.01.2012-30.06.2019 at the Department of Pathology, Bozok University, Faculty of Medicine. The results were emphasized with possible causes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The demograhphic characteristics, age and gender distributions of patients diagnosed of cancer at the Department of Pathology, Bozok University, Faculty of Medicine were examined. Data were obtained retrospectively from patients' files, added to excel files and statisticaly analysed. RESULTS: In our study, a total of 1 175 patients, 763 males and 412 females, were evaluated. The mean age of patients were 63,73+14,03. This value was 66,49+12,12 in male patients and 58,63+15,79 in female patients. According to the most common cancers without sex discrimination, 227 (%19,3) patients had prostate cancer, 137 (%11,7) patients had bladder cancer, 127 (%10,2) patients had lung cancer, 112 (%9,5) patients had breast cancer and 100 (%9,5) patients had colorectal cancer. When the sexes were taken into consideration, prostate cancer in 227 (%29,8) patients, bladder cancer in 124 (%16,3) patients, lung cancer in 105 (%13,8) patients, colorectal cancer in 60 (%7,9) patients and gastric cancer in 51 (%6,7) patients were the most common cancers detected respectively in male patients. Breast cancer in 108 (%26,2) patients, thyroid cancer in 62 (%15,1) patients, gynecologic cancer in 45 (%10,9) patients, colorectal cancer in 40 (%9,7) patients and gastric cancer in 29 (%7,0) patients were the most common cancers detected in female patients. When the distribution of cancers according to years is considered, prostate cancer in men, gynecological and bladder cancers in women gradually increased. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, it was found that prostate cancer was the most common type of cancer among men, while breast cancer was the most common type of cancer among women. Having a radiologic imaging before biyopsy for prostat cancer in men will increase the chance of finding the cancer in an early stage. Breast cancer was the leading cancer in women. Women being conscious about the disease, physical examination and mammography screening helps breast cancer to be diagnosed in early stage. Knowledge of the most common types of cancer, development of early diagnosis methods and treatments, is thought to be important in reducing the risk of mortality.
