Structural analysis of Buddy Defranco "The Bright One"

This study has been prepared in order to examine the Blues and Bebop movement, which has a general music style and life, in the short history of jazz culture. The Bright One track, which is one of the works of which the famous jazz clarinetist Buddy deFranco expresses his jazz improvisation style and interpretation, is in the group called AABA as form structure and Rhythm Changes as harmonic structure. The notes of the approach, pentatonics, major/minor modes and blues used by Franco in his work improvised throughout 12 chorus were examined and their relevance to bebop harmony was also mentioned. In the first part of this study; details about the nature, scope, importance, purpose, universe, sample, methodology and limitations of the research are given. In the second part; general information about the subject discussed for the study is included. In this context; first of all, general information about the jazz genre was given and general information about the emergence of jazz and the characteristics of the period was given. The relationship between jazz and European classical music, improvisation, jazz standards, blues form and harmonic structure of jazz are discussed. In the third part of the study; firstly, the form and general structure of The Bright One is mentioned. Then, the first 2 choruses of the improvisation of the piece, which were played with 12 repetitions, were analyzed in detail as harmonic and melodic. In the figures in this section, all of each part of the piece, which has the AABA song form, can be seen. Therefore, each figure consists of 16 measures. Afterwards, detailed melodic analysis was left and similar melodic movements were detected from the beginning of the improvisation. The repetitive melodies of each chorus are shown on a table in accordance with the measure number and the section in the form structure. Afterwards, the similarities on the note were compared with each other by means of figures. Finally, the notation containing all 12 choruses of Buddy deFranco's improvisation was included in the appendix and the study was concluded with the conclusion part.
