A technological transformation example in the transition to steam ship: Uskurlu Fethiye

The Ottoman Empire must have learned from the defeats it suffered in the wars with the European states, so it made various attempts in the field of maritime. First of all, it started to buy steamships from some countries, especially England and France. The 1827 Navarino Raid and the 1853-1856 Crimean War played an important role in the transition of the Ottoman Empire from sailboat to steamship. After these events, the Ottoman Empire decided to modernize the navy, and care was taken to make the ships to be built in accordance with the steam engine assembly. Fethiye Galleon, which is the main subject of our thesis, is one of the ships built in this direction. Fethiye Galleon, which was started to be reconstructed in the Aynalıkavak shipyard in 1853 to accommodate a 3580-tonne, 66-gun capacity and 650-horsepower machine, was sent to England in the following years and a steam engine was installed at the stern for 33800 liras. It was one of the first ships to own it. In this study, the Fethiye Galleon, one of the first ships converted from sailboats to steamboats, is centered and clarified. In the first part of the thesis, it is based on the logbook of the Fethiye galleon taken from the Naval Museum Archive, while the transitional stages of the Ottoman Empire from sailboat to steamboat are discussed. He talks about his two-year activities, which were written between 1861-1862 and 1867-1869. Based on the information obtained from the logbook, the second part consists of a total of 24 monthly tables, which are made up of separate tables for each month, and the explanations below. Obtained information The activities of the crew in Fethiye galleon for a year were organized in monthly periods. In order to meet the food needs of the soldiers, soldiers were sent every morning to buy bread, vegetables and meat from Aynalıkavak shipyard with boats or boats. Besides these, although not always done, sword, rifle and cannon drills are given to the soldiers on the ship. In addition, the soldiers, who were sent to various bodies in the shipyard and in the provinces, took duties in official ceremonies and welcoming regiments, and held guard guards in the Bosphorus and in front of the palace. The Fethiye galleon and soldiers, who had different duties similar to these, were written in the second part, completely adhering to the logbook.
