Abstract (EN)

Purpose: In this experimental study we aimed to determine relation between staying duration of nasal packing and histopathological changes occured in tissue and by this way we tried to find the connection between the duration of nasal packing and septal perforation in rabbits .Materials and Methods: Four equal groups were consisting of seven rabbits. Nazal packing was not implemented control group. After obtaining anesthesia the appropriate size double-sided silicone nasal splint was used. Nasal packings removed in 5.th day in group B, in group C in 10 th day, in group D in 15 th day. Approximately 0.5 x 0.5 cm size biopsy was taken from septum. Specimen hematoxylin-eosin stained sections were evaluated by light microscopy in a blind manner by two different pathologists. Severity of inflammation (0, none; 1, mild; 2 moderate and 3 severe) and localization (0, normal histology, 1; confined to the mucosa, 2; submucosa, 3, ulceration and / or perforation) were scored.Findings: The control group had a normal histological appearance. When B, C and D groups compared with group A about histomorphological findings, there was statistically significant difference terms of severity (p <0.05). There was no statistical significance between the groups B and C (p> 0.05). When the B group compared with group D and the group C compared with group D, the difference was statistically significant (p <0.05).Conclusion: When all these data are evaluated together, relation may be found between septal perforation occured after septoplasty operations and duration of staying of the nasal packing. Keywords: Perforation, Septoplasty, Packing
