Evaluation of the eruption timing of permanent teeth in children with molar incisor hypomineralisation

Abstract (EN)
Tooth eruption is a developmental process that encompasses the non-functional position to the functional occlusion position in the bo ne. Local and systemic factors that can occur during tooth development can affect tooth eruption, and development defects in teeth can be seen when ameloblasts are affected by various local and systemic factors during enamel formation, which is part of tooth development. Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH), one of these developmental defects, is a mild defect in which hypomineralized teeth are seen in the mouth. Its etiology is unknown and a general distribution has not been observed. This study aimed to assess the age at which permanent teeth eruption occurs in children with MIH. The study group included 300 children ranging in age from 6 to 12 who did not have any systemic disease and who had undergone an intraoral examination to arrive at an MIH diagnosis. The control group included children of the same sex and age as the patients in the MIH group; the children in the control group were healthy, had no systemic disease, and had no mineralization disorder in their teeth. For the patients in the MIH group and the control group, all of the permanent tooth eruption conditions were evaluated based on the criteria reported in Pahkala et al. The mean age of tooth eruption in the MIH group was compared to the average age of tooth eruption in the children in the control group. Patients were also assessed based on their gender. When the results of our study were assessed, it was observed that tooth eruption occured at an older age in the children in the MIH group in comparison to the children in the control group; however, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the age averages. Similar results were obtained when the girls and boys were assessed based on their respective gender. It was observed that MIH had no effect on tooth eruption. Because tooth eruption is an important part of tooth development, developmental dental anomalies are an important issue that needs to be investigated.
