Abstract (EN)
The use of big data and tools in public and private institutions and the need for qualified personnel who understand big data analysis are increasing day by day. However, there is no comprehensive study on the awareness of big data education necessity in universities that meet the need for qualified personnel in Turkey. In this context, this study is composed of four sub-studies intended to detect big data awareness. The first study aims to examine the use of big data and tools in the public and private institutions and determine the industry's expectations from higher education and students for qualified personnel in this field. In the first study, a qualitative research process was designed, and data were collected through interviews with managers of public and private institutions. The second study evaluates students' experiences and identifies the difficulties they face while learning big data tools. In this study, the qualitative methodology was followed. The data were collected from undergraduate students participating in one-day big data training, participant observation, and self-assessments of participation. The third study aims to analyze the big data awareness and expectations of faculty members in universities that meet different sectors' qualified staff needs. In this study, data were collected through a questionnaire. The fourth study aims to measure students' big data competence, awareness, and expectations in higher education. In addition, a big data awareness, competence and expectations scale was developed in this study. In this quantitatively constructed study, the data were collected through a questionnaire too. It is integrated into the big data subject curriculum in higher education institutions in Turkey on evolutions to be made on issues discussed. It is presented these evolutions as suggestions. The findings are also evaluated in the Eleventh Development Plan with the policy measures that Higher Education Council is the responsible institution and is developed constructive criticisms.
