Studies on the problematic of contemporary consciousness in the context of quantum theory

This study addresses the problematic nature of consciousness. Despite all contemporary scientific advancements, there is still no universally accepted definition of consciousness. Therefore, the study first examines the concept itself. In the first chapter, a general framework is drawn regarding ideas on what consciousness is and how it emerges, as discussed in relevant literatüre. Furthermore, the study explores how the concept of consciousness has been interpreted throughout the history of philosophy. It is observed that the meaning attributed to consciousness has varied depending not only on philosophical perspectives but also on scientific developments. As a result of the scientific method and philosophical understanding introduced by classical physics, consciousness has been studied within the domains of philosophy of mind and neuroscience. With the advent of quantum thery, the scientific method and philosophical stance of classical physics have been criticized and found insufficient by many scientists and philosophers. Several theories connecting quantum mechanics, the brain, and consciousness have been proposed, including the philosophical implications of quantum theory. Accordingly, the second chapter compares and contrasts consciousness approaches based on classical physics and quantum physics. Although quqntum mechanics-based theories appear epistemologically more inclusive, it is concluded that consciousness remains an ontological and metaphysical issue. Moreover, the philosophical concepts emerging from quantum theory Show significant parallels with the terminology of post-structuralist philosophy. In this regard, the third chapter aims to interpret the issue of consciousness through these concepts, further reinforcing its ontological and metaphysical nature. The study aims to contribute to the consciousness debate within the context of science and philosophy.
