Baroque period techniques and approaches as a way of creating a contemporary portrait style

In the art of painting, pictures that show a figure from the waist up, especially the shoulders and the head, are called portraits. The first examples of competent portraits are the portraits that produced as coffin objects in the Fayyum region of Egypt, which was dominated by the Greco-Roman culture. These paintings, which are examples of successful portraits in terms of naturalistic tendency, are the first paintings that are known to belong to unimportant people. Realistic representation was excluded from art until the early Renaissance period, with Christianity being accepted as the official religion after the fourth century AD. With the 15th century, emerged examples of portraits, in which the similarity became evident. This change reflected a resurgence of Greco-Roman tradition, along with a new interest in everyday life and individual identity. Therefore the resurgence of the portrait became an important manifestation of the Renaissance in Europe. The philosophy of the seventeenth century, on the other hand, developed an integrated thought connection from the knowledge provided by the Renaissance. In this period, in order for the viewer to focus only on the portrait and facial expression, the artists used the use of paint, light, shadow and color that had begun to be developed in the Renaissance and Mannerist era, borrowing but increasing its effect. In this way, the artists of the Baroque period succeeded in creating a strong and dramatic emotional effect as well as the physical appearance of the person. The philosophy of the seventeenth century was formed based on physics and mathematical concepts instead of observation and experiment, and rationalism was revived after centuries. In a society increasingly dominated by secular leaders, images of richly dressed figures have been a way of affirming the authority of important persons. Flemish painters Anthony van Dyck and Peter Paul Rubens produced in this type of portrait, while Jan Vermeer produced mostly portraits of middle class members. This study aims to examine the examples of portraits that point to important transformations in the art of painting from the seventeenth century to the present, and especially the techniques and methods that gave the Baroque period painting its character, with its plastic properties, and to explore the possibilities that the findings obtained at the end of these studies will provide for the originality of my personal artworks. In addition, these researches will enable me to understand the connections of my own paintings with art history as a young artist.
