Brutalist tendencies in modern ceramics art

With the development of technology at the beginning of the 20th century, innovations occurred in many disciplines. New materials and techniques, such as the use of concrete and steel in construction, paved the way for unconventional approaches to architecture. Modern architecture, which emerged from the first half of the 20th century, became widespread especially after the Second World War. Brutalism is a trend that emerged after the 1950s, in the continuation of the modern architectural movement. This movement consists of sharp geometric forms produced from concrete as a material, plain and formally away from ornamentation. Specifically, the most distinctive feature of the stream is that the material function or carrier elements are understandable. The simplicity of the material and the use of its raw form create a sculptural impression in these structures. For this reason, when Brutalist structures are examined, it is possible to establish a connection with the plastic arts. When evaluated by considering the basic features of brutalist structures, works with similar characteristics are seen in the field of sculpture and contemporary ceramic art. When we examine the classical ceramic art, the ceramic products we encounter create a rough, raw and rough aesthetic perception consisting of unglazed surfaces. In this context, brutalist tendencies in classical ceramic art will be examined in detail within the scope of the research. Today's industrial ceramic art has developed screen printing techniques, digital printing techniques and decorative production methods in floor and wall tiles in the ceramic tile industry. With the popularization of the industrial style in interiors, it is seen that exposed concrete-looking ceramics are frequently used in wall and floor coverings. Contemporary ceramic art, like other art fields, has developed new styles and methods that have moved away from the traditional by taking advantage of the technology and the returns of the age. In contemporary ceramic art, there are minimalist works that carry monumental values, consist of geometric forms, and where technical features are not hidden. In this study, the works of some artists in the art of ceramics will be re-examined with a brutalist eye, and the issue of what the brutalist effect is for the art of ceramics will be discussed.
