Agonistic politics in modern political philosophy

Modern agonistic politics is a late modern political movement of thought which derives from the constitutive and regulatory feature of power and conflict (politically) in-between human beings -in a sense it grounds on agon- and which persistently lays great stress on the possibility of a democratic co-existence in spite of this power and conflict reality. With its insistent emphasis on democracy this movement of thought has offered an influential solution to the modern democratic/political legitimacy crisis by cultivating the hope that it is possible to set up a new or newly thematized delicate balance between universal and particular, identity and difference, unity and multitude or ever between reason and freedom.In this study which presents a comprehensive literature research, modern agonistic politics is examined through three chapters. In the first chapter where the underlying definitions, meanings, components and main intellectual heritage of agonistic politics are addressed, it is aimed to elucidate the intellectual and historical heritage shaping modern agonistic politics.In the second chapter of our study, modern agonistic politics? relationship with democracy is discussed in detail. Modern agonistic politics is originally a political/philosophical theory aspiring to establish a democratic social/political order. Such that the aim of democratic consolidation cultivated along with the commitment to the liberal values constitutes the most crucial aspect of agonistic politics.The third and last chapter of our study is designated for a comprehensive critique of modern agonistic politics. In this chapter, the critiques against modern agonistic politics are addressed and brought up for discussion under totally five thematic problems. One of the most significant dilemmas in front of the agonistic political order or democracy model is how to differentiate agon from violence. The second problem leading agonistic politics to a stalemate is pertinent to the question of on what sort of reason or harmony basis agonistic political order is to be constructed. The third problem leaving agonistic politics open to criticism is pertinent to the question of determining who shall be the ?other(s)? of agonistic identity. The fourth problem with the agonistic politics, which is more involved in philosophical concerns, is pertinent to the question of historicity. And the fifth and last problem with the agonistic politics is pertinent to the concepts of resentment and undecidability. The concepts of resentment and undecidability constitute two crucial points (so to say ?anchoring point?) of agonistic philosophy.
