The applique technique in contemporary textile art

It is known that shelter and clothing have been among the primary needs of human beings in history. Humans developed various textile surface techniques such as weaving, knitting and felting to meet these requirements. Over time, applications were conducted on textile surfaces with certain techniques such as printing, dyeing, sewing and folding. The applique technique discussed in the present thesis is an application method that entails sewing on a textile surface. In the present master's thesis titled the "The Appliqué Technique in Contemporary Textile Art", the significance of appliqué technique, a textile surface method, in contemporary textile art is discussed. In the literature review conducted on the studies accessed in BHE Database, it was determined that certain studies were conducted on patchwork, embroidery, tie-dyeing, appliqué, etc.; however, there was no study on the significance of appliqué in the contemporary textile art, hence the present study would contribute to the literature. The significance of the present thesis is based on the fact that it is the first master's thesis where the significance of the appliqué technique, which has been a significant component of the traditional culture, in contemporary textile art is scrutinized. In the study, textile surface techniques in textile arts were discussed. Thus, an in-depth literature review was conducted to address the history of the appliqué technique, a sewing method, including significant traditional applications. Furthermore, certain appliqué and stitching types employed in appliqué applications are also discussed. The development of contemporary textile arts and appliqué technique in contemporary textile art is investigated and the applications and techniques adopted by the contemporary textile artists are mentioned. The present study aimed to contribute to the contemporary textile art literature, the comprehension of the significance of the appliqué technique, a historical textile art method, in contemporary textile art, and it could be suggested that the findings would contribute to future studies, and artists and designers.
