The use of technology in contemporary theater and interaction of actor

The technology use which increases its presence in contemporary theater day by day makes new contributions to the expression opportunities of the theater. Knowing the contributions and the renovations brought by the emergent new elements of expression for the actor's work is important in terms of the integrity of the interaction of the factors on the stage with one another and the correct conveyance of what is desired to be conveyed to the audience. Revolutionary innovations offered by the technological era are not yet utilized active enough in the field of theater. Realizing the potential offered by the technology use that can play a key role in the theater's catching the modern line in terms of design and expression, searching the studies conducted in this field and evaluating their outcomes, discussing the actor's existing and also potential interaction opportunities with the technology by focusing on the innovations brought by the technology use in the theater constitutes the main axis of this thesis. In this study, only visual (projection, video, mapping, hologram, augmented reality, virtual reality, motion capture) technologies used in contemporary theatre have been focused on. The other technologies such as sound, lighting and stage prop are excluded from the research. The thesis in which a short historical process was mentioned with the fact that visual technologies started to take place in the theater in the 19th century, the selected examples were examined to show what innovative technologies have contributed so far and can contribute in the future to the expression made on the stage. An effort was made to show how the technologies are used, how they play a role in the expression and how they interact with the actor by discussing the examples of contemporary theater practices in the last two decades. Following the evaluation made in the light of tangible data obtained from the interviews and tests conducted with the people who have taken part in the practices performed in this field before, actions to be taken have been revealed to increase the interaction between the actor and the technology. An effort to determine the advantages offered by the technology to create a new language in the theater by means of the practices and experimental examples created using the technologies was made by showing the level of opportunities offered by these technologies, and the possibilities of how the actor can interact with the latest technologies that can be used in the future of contemporary theater were mentioned.
