The effect of employees' dark leadership and favoritism perceptions on presenteeism: A research in the textile sector

Abstract (EN)

Today, in the conditions of increasing competition with globalization the survival of organizations and their advantage over their competitors depend on their organizational success. The productivity of the employees has a very important place in ensuring efficiency and performance, which are the leading indicators of organizational success. There are many factors that affect the employees and therefore their productivity in organizations. In this context, dark leadership which is defined as the negative reflection of the negative characteristics in the leader's personality on the decisions and behaviors of the leader, affects the employees. In addition, favoritism which is the appointment of the employee to a position on the basis of kinship, friendship-friendship, without considering the characteristics such as merit and competence and presenteeism which is defined as the inability of current employees to fulfill their duties despite being at work, come to the fore in employee productivity. The main purpose of this research is; to investigate the effect of employees' dark leadership and favoritism perceptions on presenteeism. In addition, it is also investigated whether the effect of employees' dark leadership and favoritism perceptions on presenteeism varies according to their demographic characteristics. In this context, it is thought that the research fills an important theoretical gap. The universe of the research; Employees in medium and large-scale textile enterprises operating in the province of Malatya are formed. Questionnaire technique was used to collect the data, and a total of 513 questionnaires were evaluated. In the analysis of data; SPSS 26.0 and SPSS AMOS 24.0 programs were used. According to the findings, a moderate, positive and significant relationship was found between dark leadership and favoritism with presenteeism. On the other hand, a high level, positive and significant relationship was found between dark leadership and favoritism. In the analyzes made accordingly, it was found that the dark leadership and favoritism perceptions of the employees had a significant effect on presenteeism. Increases in employees' perceptions of dark leadership and favoritism cause presenteeism to increase. Considering the harms of presenteeism, it has been concluded that the struggle of organizations against dark leadership and favoritism is inevitable.
