Abstract (EN)

Lugaz is a distinctive genre in Classical Turkish Literature that is based on both wordplay and intellectual problem-solving. Numerous poets in Turkish literary history have composed lugazes, indicating the popularity and appreciation of this genre among literary figures. The manuscript examined in this study is a rich compilation containing lugazes written by poets who lived during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This study focuses on the transliteration and analysis of the lugaz manuscript registered as Or. 1913 in the Cambridge University Library. A total of 252 lugazes found between folios 1b and 59a of the manuscript were transcribed using the transcription alphabet and subsequently examined in terms of their form, language, orthography, and content. In addition, the lugazes contained in the manuscript were compared with those found in similar studies in order to identify linguistic and structural differences. The analysis reveals that this manuscript provides valuable insights into the functionality of the lugaz genre in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, its relationship with everyday life, and the poetic tradition based on wordplay in Classical Turkish Literature. The study is significant not only for bringing an unpublished text to light but also for demonstrating the relationship between material culture, social life, and literary craftsmanship in Ottoman poetry of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is hoped that this research will contribute to future studies in the field. Keywords: Classical Turkish Literature, Divan Poetry, Manuscript Collection (Mecmua), Lugaz, Riddle.
