Abstract (EN)

PERFORMANCE-BASED DESIGN of STEEL STRUCTURESbrahim DEM RCivil Engineering, M.S. ThesisAfter major earthquakes occured in several countries in recent years, the need for the mostoptimum solution between economy and strength have become more important. As a result ofinvestigations and researches, current building codes have lack for achieving that solution. Thus, different analyse and design methods have been discussing in earthquake engineering. In this study, it is aimed to review performance evaluation methods of steel frames especiallycapacity spectrum method which are the most popular subject of the earthquake engineering.Furtermore, plastic theory and response spectrum analyse method were mentioned. Ninestorey moment resisting steel frame?s performance were evaulated by using drift ratios andplastic rotation capacities. Capacity spectrum method were used to find the targetperformance of the frame. In addition to nonlinear static solution, nonlinear time-historyanalyse were used to find real locations of plastic hinges at the target performance point. Sothe success of capacity spectrum method were found by comparing two analyse results.IZM_EW acceleration record (7.4 magnitude Izmit Earthquke, 1999) were used for time -history analyse. Keywords: Performance based seismic design, performance evaluation of steel frames, capacity spectrum method.JURY:1.
