Cemâlü'l-Küttâb ve Kemâlü'l-Hüssâb Matrakçı Nasûh (Analysis-Text-Index-Dictionary)

Turks have shown a great interest in mathematics since their acceptance of Islam. The basis of this interest lies in the need for mathematical knowledge in various areas of Islam. For example, mathematics plays an important role in the calculation of prayer times, inheritance law, commerce, and engineering. The author of the work under study, Matrakçı Nasûh, is also an important scientist who contributed to the science of mathematics. The work we examined in our study is located in the Rare Books Library of Istanbul University. The work is registered with the inventory number NEKTY2719. The work is written in divanî script. It has 56 folios. There are 13 lines on each page. The dimensions are 209x142 mm. The section we worked on is the folio numbers 1b-56a. The translation of this manuscript copy will be transferred to the transcription alphabet. After the transfer to the transcription alphabet, the grammatical index of the work we are considering will be followed by a dictionary study. Finally, a language study will be carried out. For the sake of being a source, mathematical works written in Old Anatolian Turkish will be taken into consideration and other mathematical and Ottoman accounting texts written in Turkish will be scanned. The aim of this study is to reveal the linguistic features of this mathematical work belonging to Matrakçı Nasûh, to reveal the sound and shape information of the writing language of the period, and to establish a connection between the mathematical terms used in the field of science at that time and the terms used today.
