Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to determine the DKAY knowledge and practices of the nurses working in surgical units. This study was conducted as complementary in surgical units of İnönü Üniversity Turgut Özal Medical Center ( TÖTM ) between June 2015- September 2016. The universe of the research consits of 242 nurses working in TÖTM surgical unit. The sample of study includes all nurses.183 nurses took part to the study and 75.6 % of the research universe has been reached. The datas have been collected by the nurses working in the TÖTM surgical unit through survey forms created by researcher between May and June 2016. Survey forms were filled during the working hours of nurses using face to face interviews. Each interview lasted for 10-15 minutes. Ki-kare, t test in independent groups, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance has been used in order to evaluate the datas. It was identified that 67.2% of the nurses having taken part into the study have a graduate degree, 33.9% of them have 6-10 years of working experience,98.4% of them had taken DKAY training before and 97.3% of them had Hepatitis B injection. It was determined that as the working years increased the condition of having the hepatitis B injection increased as well, the nurses working in intensive care unit or operation unit have their antibody levels checked in less than a year periods, 33.3% of the nurses having taken DKAY training were injured by ampul / flakon, 76.7% of the nurses having taken DKAY training thought that they had taken enough precautions about DKAY, the average age of the nurses being injured by ampul / flakon is 28.6 ± 4.45 and the reporting of injuries cases increase as age rises. Any meaningful differences couldn't be determined between education levels and the tool causes the injury, between education levels and having DKAY or having DKAY and working hours. Nurses, especially the new ones must be trained at regular intervals about DKAY and diseases led by DKAY in order to create sufficient awareness. In-service trainings should be organized for nurses.
