The effect of physician-nurse collaboration perceived by surgical nurses on individual-centered perioperative nursing care

This study aimed to examine the effect of physician-nurse collaboration perceived by surgical nurses on person-centered perioperative nursing care. The research, designed as a descriptive and cross-sectional study, was conducted with 424 nurses working in the surgical clinic, surgical intensive care unit (ICU) and operating room units of Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Health Application and Research Center and Afyonkarahisar State Hospital. Data were collected using the Nurse Introduction Form, Jefferson Scale of Attitudes Toward Physician-Nurse Collaboration (JSAPNC) and Person-Centered Perioperative Nursing Scale (PCPON). Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 22.0 (Armonk, NY: IBM Corp). Pearson correlation analysis and regression modelling were applied to examine the effect of physician-nurse collaboration on person-centered perioperative nursing care. Among the 424 participating nurses, 69.3% were female, 41.7% worked in surgical clinics, 32.8% in surgical ICU, and 25.5% in operating rooms. The total mean score for the JSAPNC was 51.16±4.67. A statistically significant difference was found between the nurses' age, unit of work, and total length of work experiences in nursing with physician-nurse collaboration attitude scores (p<0.05). The total mean score for the PCPON Scale was 85.57±9.16. A statistically significant difference was found between person-centered perioperative nursing care scores with age, gender, and total length of work experience in nursing (p<0.05). A statistically significant correlation was identified between the total mean scores of JSAPNC and PCPON (p<0.05), indicating that a one-unit increase in the JSAPNC score led to a 0.705-unit increase in PCPON. In this study, both JSAPNC and PCPON total mean scores were found to be high. In conclusion, a positive relationship was observed between physician-nurse collaboration and person-centred perioperative care. Since improved physician-nurse collaboration improves perioperative nursing performance, these findings may guide hospital administrators in developing intervention programmes to improve collaborative attitudes.
