Abstract (EN)

Transverse maxillary deficiency is the skeletal discrepancy which is seen frequently in the adult individuals who seek orthodontic treatment. Surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) is indicated in the skeletally matured individuals with transverse maxillary deficiency that is not possible to correct the maxilla with conventional rapid maxillary expansionIn every field of surgery, the aim is to cause less complications by minimizing the tissue damage and to provide a less painful and more comfortable post operative recuperation period for the patients. Piezoelectric surgery is a new innovating surgical technique minimizing the tissue damage and postoperative morbidity with piezoelectric ultrasonic vibrations that ensures to perform safe and effective osteotomiesThe purpose of this study is to compare the postoperative pain, edema, patient satisfaction and operation time between piezoelectric surgery device and conventional rotatory instruments that are used to perform SARME to correct the maxillary width in the patients with transversal maxillary deficiencyRegarding the mean average of facial edema values and visual analog scale pain scores, the edema and pain was found to be more after the use of conventional rotatory instruments to perform maxillary osteotomies. Patient satisfaction was observed to be higher after the use of piezoelectric surgery technique. In the piezoelectric surgery technique, the operation time was found to be longer due to the relative cutting efficiency of the piezoelectric surgery deviceIn conclusion, this study shows that piezoelectric surgery technique is an effective and safe method to minimize the tissue damage and patient morbidity. Due to intra- and post-operative comfort, the patients who were treated with SARME procedure was more satisfied with piezoelectric surgery technique.
