A terminology analysis of translation study academicians' tendency on using terms to name the field, sub-field, action and profession

Although the act of translation has a history of thousands of years, its emergence and development as a scientific field of study dates back to the late 1970s and the early 1980s in our country. This is also in parallel with the developments all around the world. This field of science, which had previously been the field of self-study under the umbrella of social sciences such as Philology and Linguistics, has been shaped as translation studies with the scientific perspectives and terminology that the scholars who participated in the field during the development process have brought together from the previous fields of expertise. There has been no consensus in the methods and terminology to be used as a result of the fact that scientists working in this new field have different educational and scientific field backgrounds. Therefore, over the years, different terms have been used in the literature on translation studies. This situation can be clearly observed both in the world literature and in the Turkish literature. The difference in the Turkish literature, which starts with the establishment of the field name, extends to the subfields, actions and professional names. A detailed list of the terms used to name the field, sub-fields, actions and professionals in the literature is given in the relevant sections of the study. The aim of this study is to examine the extent to which these semantic differences are observed by academicians who use terminology in their products intensively, and who train and become role models of the individuals' terminology tendencies to participate in the field. For this purpose, a survey is prepared as a quantitative data collection tool to determine the terminology tendencies of academicians who work in programs providing undergraduate level translation education in Turkey and the possibilities of reflecting the educational backgrounds to their terminology tendencies. Later, the most emphasized criteria in the terminology literature were compiled according to the features that the terms should have and an evaluation chart was created and the terms with which the participants showed the highest tendency were taken into the terminological evaluation with the qualitative data collection method. The results show that the increase in specialization in the field of translation has the possibility of bringing a term unity. When all the findings are examined, the Turkish terms that match the most terminology criteria among the terms with which the highest tendency of the participants is observed are çeviribilim-çeviribilimci, çeviri-çevirmen, yazılı çeviri-yazılı çevirmen, sözlü çeviri-sözlü çevirmen, andaş çeviri-andaş çevirmen and ardıl çeviri-ardıl çevirmen.
