The manipulative power of translation on diasporic communities: an investigation of the role of translation in manipulating Turkish Diaspora in Germany

Compulsory migration movements can happen sometimes to increase the level of welfare and fulfill the dreams, sometimes for arbitrary reasons or desire to live in a cultural atmosphere where the individual feels closer to himself/herself. One of the biggest problems experienced by migrants who migrated from their own environment, culture and language to another environment is undoubtedly the adaptation problem. The differences between language and culture are the leading causes of adaptation problem, or in other words, discordance. Considering the German case today, it can be said that the Turkish diaspora is an important example in terms of discordance. It is seen that the adaptation which German sovereign mentality expects from Turkish diaspora cannot be accommodated. The Turkish society in Germany fails to integrate in the eyes of German society. Since 2001, anti-Islamism and an increasingly intolerant, ever-increasing alienating attitude especially in Western society has been felt in the German public over Muslim Turkish public. In addition to that, the political rivalry between Germany and Turkey deepens this situation more. On the one hand, the fact that Turkish side sees these integration calls as assimilation, on the other hand, the fact that German side accepts Turks as integration disabled stalemates the case of both countries. In such a case election process in Turkey, Turkey's foreign military operations, the election process in Germany, Turkey's EU membership, the hot topics of politics such as PKK/KWP (Kurdish Workers Party) problem are handled within the framework of Turkey in German public and via this Turkish Diaspora in Germany is involved in the topics as well. The current research explores how translation can play a role in the light of all these notions. Considering the publications of the ZDF/GSC (Germany State Channel) in particular; the efforts of the German state to inform the Turkish diaspora and to form an opinion in German society - the official opinion of the German state - stand out. In this respect, the existing study particularly focuses on in which such initiatives have been intensified, and how the ZDF/GSC has taken a turn in the period of military, social mobility, where political moves have increased; it also includes research on the perception of the Turkish diaspora by using translation.
