Özet (EN)
This thesis seeks to illustrate the justice issues claimed by environmental defenders. Many traditional distribution justice scholars see the injustice issues based on inequality or the distribution of environmental diseases and benefits. According to recent research, the inequality of distribution is insufficient to comprehend environmental movements' demands in practice. Distribution, recognition, participation, and capability approaches are examined to comprehensively understand environmental defenders' justice demands on environmental diseases and benefits in the thesis. The study mostly emphasizes the matter of recognition of different groups in environmental issues. Lack of recognition may influence an injustice problem because of not being accepted group differences in society. The study seeks to illustrate why some societies are more advantaged or disadvantaged than other communities. Moreover, it tries to demonstrate the social-psychological effects of non-recognition and misrecognition over communities. Along with highlighting the recognition justice approach, its social-psychological influence is examined with the Social Identity Theory, a social-psychological theory for explaining relations between person-person, person-society, and society-society. The intergroup relations in ecological movements can appear as a conflict in a non-violent or violent way. The study's aim is that even though the underlying motivations concerning many environmental movements seem to rely upon environmental loss and risks, identity groups of activists can be one of the other trigger reasons and determine the level of conflict of environmental actions. To achieve this, it tries to provide a comparative analysis of environmental justice conflicts occurring in South and North Carolina, Florida, and Michigan.
