Investigation of usage of environmental typographic designs in urban scale

The writing has been an effective tool for shaping urban space throughout history. The existence of the city has gained meaning along with the writing and history has been transferred to the future with writing. In the typographic designs in the areas and spaces of the city, traces of the cultural heritage of the inhabitants can be seen. Typography as a means of wayshowing, informing, signing and wayfinding is in interaction with us in the urban environment. In this study, the evolution of writing and cultural, historical changes, important typographic developments, the points where the coexistence of city and writing contribute to the environmental graphic design and typography culture, periods and trends are examined with examples. Emphasis has been placed on the formation of the city space and the typographic identity, memory and message of the city and the interaction of the individuals living in the city with the typography. The usage areas of environmental typographic designs are gathered under certain group titles and these are examined through various project examples. In this direction, an environmental typographic X-ray of the city was attempted. Within the scope of the thesis, the coexistence of typography with the built environment was tried to be determined and the results were completed with the suggestion of a project.
