Abstract (EN)
This research examined online art galleries and auction houses in the art market in Turkey from the perspective of art sellers and art buyers. The data of the research was collected by interviewing experts in the relevant field and through a survey among art buyers. Qualitative data were analyzed with MAXQDA, and quantitative data were analyzed with SPSS. A paired samples t-test was applied to compare which of the online and brick-and-mortar art platforms art buyers prefer more. Correlation analysis was conducted to evaluate whether there was a relationship between purchasing frequency and budget, purchasing purpose and budget. ANOVA was applied to conclude the difference between age and frequency of purchasing artworks. Content analysis was conducted on the open-ended questions that answered the effect of the size of the artwork in the survey on purchasing and the positive and negative aspects of online art platforms. On the art dealer side, some of the positives aspects of digitalization include reaching the masses and not being tied to one location. For art buyers, time-saving and variety are positive aspects of online art platforms, while inability to feel and reliability are negative aspects. It has been found that the effect of size of the artwork on purchasing is important due to the harmony between space and the size of the artwork. No significant difference was found between age and online art purchases. It has been found that the most preferred type of artwork among painting, sculpture, photography and edition print genres is painting.
