Corporate image of penal institutions: An analysis in the context of newspaper news

The notions of image and corporate image have recently been of more significance than before. The factor of image, which has become necessary to the existence and continuity of institutions and corporations, has still been focused in academic studies. The main purpose of our survey is find answers to the question how the image of penal institution appears in the media. In this study, it will be provided, first of all, that the input, which is based on a broad literature research, on what the notions of image and corporate image are. Then, it will be seen a careful consideration of the notion of image with the notion of corporate image. The news from Hürriyet, Sabah and Sözcü newspapers are being analyzed aiming at a general view on the representation of penal institutions in the media with regard to the notion of corporate image. In addition to this, certain news from TCPS's (Turkey's Center for Prison Studies) and CTE's (General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Centers) websites are also analyzed. It is carefully elaborated that those news are singled out in terms of their occurrence closer to the present time and their relatedness to current problems. That those news are picked from the leading national mainstream newspapers makes our study proper to a general criterion for evaluation. The news are analyzed and scrutinized with the help of discourse analysis. It follows that a definition of penal institution, its types and history. Moreover, it is also provided here that a definition for the concept of discourse analysis and its content. The main purpose of this study is to show the problem of to what extent the corporate image of penal institutions is represented in the media. Also, it is to reveal this problem of how the corporate image of penal institutions is handled in the media with the very help of the technique of discourse analysis.
