Charlemagne ve Carolingian Renaissance

This thesis aims to investigate firstly the personality, military and economical and social activities of Charlemagne who is the leader of Carolingian Empire, one of the biggest empires in Medieval Europe, attained to the title of Emperor in history and secondly the effects of the Carolingian Renaissance, known as the first Renaissance of Europe, initiated in cultural area, on both his own age and latter ages, and it is mainly consisted of three parts. In the first part, Francs and Merovingians as their first dynasty, the acquisition of power by Carolingians as their royal cabinet, the kings of Carolingian dynasty before and after Charlemagne and finally the disappearance of Carolingians from the scene of history was criticised. The second part was dedicated to the life of Charlemagne and his activities in every fields. In the last part, the material and moral elements of Carolingian Renaissance as well as the scholars who affected the Renaissance were given place and examined. The method used in this study is the translation of main references in Latin Language and English books to our language, the classification of them in subjects and the literalization of them. As a result of the studies carried out, it was found out that Charlemagne is an eponym for the award granted to the person who exerts the efforts for unification of Europe, still at the time being, as well as the performed the reforms in every aspect of life and succeeded in the integrity of Medieval Europe in all aspects. By means of his possessed power, the most importantly he was a leader accepted by Pope as an ally and honoured with the title of ?Emperor? in the year 800. This movement of Renaissance he initiated is a vital breakthrough for the culture Medieval Europe in terms of many different aspects such as leading the classical works from the past to today and being a model for the other Renaissance movements.Key words:1.
