Abstract (EN)

In this work, we aimed to both study the protective effect of methanolic Chenopodium album extract on DNA from oxidative stress and determination of its antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobial activity of the extract was tested against Micrococcus luteus, Listeria monocytogenes (ATCC 7644), Basillus cereus (ATCC 11778), Enterecoccus fecalis (ATCC 29212), Bacillus subtilis (NRS-744), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25992), Salmonella typhimurium (NRRLB-4420), Proteus vulgaris (NRRLB-4420) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 11778). Our finding showed that methanolic extract of Chenopodium album have antimicrobial activity against both Gram (+) and G(-) bacteria. We have examined the potential protective effects of Chenopodium album extract against H2O2-induced genotoxic effects on both human mononuclear leukocyte and Saccharomyces cerevisiae BY4741 (MATa his3?1 leu2?0 met15?0 ura3?0) in vitro. These were evaluated by using alkaline single cell electrophoresis (SCGE, Comet assay). The antioxidant properties of the extract were assessed by determining total antioxidative capacity (TAC), total oxidative capacity (TOC) levels. These results suggested that the extract has a potent antioxidant activity and the comet assay is a robust and sensitive technique for detection of DNA damage in yeast cells.
