INHIBITON OF ZINC CORROSION BY USING BENZOTRIAZOLE TOLYTRIAZOLE AND QUARTAMINE SALTS (MASTER THESIS) AYSEL GEDİK KILINÇ GAZİ UNIVERSTIY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE 2001 AUGUST ABSTRACT In this study, the corrosion of zinc metal, which has wide application fields, in 0.1 M HCI + 3% NaCI; 0.1 M NaOH + 3% NaCl and 7M NaOH media, which had not been studied before, was investigated by using weight-loss, gas evolution and potentiodynamic methods. Inhibition effect of Tolytriazole (TTA), Benzotriazole (BTA) and three different quartamine salts which are quartamine THL (QTHL), quartamine T (QT) and quartamine D 86PI (QD86P1), on zinc corrosion were investigated in acidic and basic media. It was seen that, while TTA and BTA were not effectual in 0.1 M HCI + 3% NaCI medium QT, QTHL and QD86PI which are quartamine salts, have 87%, 84%, 87% inhibition effect, respectively. Furthermore, in 7M NaOH medium, QT and QTHL have 75% and 81% inhibition effect, respectively. Percent inhibitor effectiveness was calculated from the formula flRo-R|/R0}*100 where R and R0 stand for slopes which are obtained from time (min.) vs amount of gas (cm3) curves with and without inhibitor, respectively. A mechanism for explaining inhibitor effectiveness was proposed by the aid of potentiodynamic curves and studies on IR spectra obtained for these salts. Effect of inhibitors on zinc corrosion in 0.1 M HCI + 3% NaCI and 7M NaOH media was investigated bu using gas evolution and weight-loss methods.
