Relationships between gender stereotypes, identity strength, self-presentation, and legitimation of the honor system

In accordance the System Justification Theory; ideological approval, in/out group favoritism and stereotyping used as means to justify the system. Therefore, it's essential to determine the variables, which mediate or regulate these tools. In this thesis study, the mediator role of self-presentation strategies examined in terms of the relation of the legitimation of honor system to the positive female-male stereotype beliefs and identification with gender group. Positive female-male stereotypes beliefs and honor system legitimation relation examined in terms of regulatory role of identification with gender group. Additionally, relationships between study variables demonstrated in the study. The sample of the research consists of total of 589 university students, 424 female and 165 male. As data collection tools, the Demographic Information Form, the Honor System Justification Scale, the List of Stereotypes Against Women and Men, the Gender Group Identification Scale, the Self-Presentation Strategies Scale and the Self-Adjustment Scale used. The study consists of two studies as preliminary study and main study. In the preliminary study, the validity and reliability study of the Self-Presentation Strategies Scale included. In the main study, correlation analysis first applied to examine the relationships between the variables of the thesis. Following, Hayes (2013)'s Process Macro plug-in used to detect the presence of mediator and regulatory models. According to the mediation analysis findings that obtained, determined that the influence sub-dimension of self-presentation strategies mediated the relationship between the sociability and morality/honor sub-dimensions of stereotypes beliefs against women and the legitimation of the honor system. Based on the findings of the regulatory analysis, the regulatory effect of the interaction of the sociability and morality/honor sub-dimensions of stereotypes beliefs against males and gender group identification on the justification of the honor system found to be significant. According to findings of research, it can be stated that self-presentation strategies mediate the relations of positive female-male stereotypes beliefs and gender group identification in justifying the honor system and identification with gender group also regulates these relations.
