Gender identity discrimination and invisibility in the mainstream media: Transgender deaths (Suicides/murders)

Heteronormativity is one of the major problems of the patriachal societies. This fiction and gender regime, which is thought to be natural, is shaping all areas of life. Within the context, especially transgender ('T') individuals are exposed to gender identity discrimination, and deaths (murder, suicide). As the media naturalizes and reproduces the gender regime, it acts as an ideological apparatus that expels bodies and gender identities that are considered out of norm. Within this context answers has been sought to these questions: 1-How are deaths of 'T' individuals and 'T' individuals established through dominant ideology, and how are they transmitted from the print media, an ISA? 2- How are 'T' individuals positioned themselves in social life, how do they build themselves politically, how does this construction affect their daily lives, and how do they experience life in violation of rights? In order to find answers to the questions, three different methods have been used in the axis of triangulation methodology: critical discourse analysis, online observation and interviewing. As a result ISAs and RSAs, like the media, have been found to have negative effects in the life of 'T' individuals. It has been found that transgender deaths in the mainstream newspapers are presented through discursive construction in order to reinforce negative perceptions in the public opinion. Because the overall deaths have been presented as individual issues, separated from the political context and served to the reader by re-producing gender identity discrimination.
