Analysis of Clinebell's Growth Counseling and its applicability in the field of SCG in Türkiye

This thesis re-evaluates Howard Clinebell's "Growth Counseling" approach in relation to the theoretical/practical needs of Spiritual Counseling and Guidance (SCG) services in Türkiye and examines its local adaptability. It is motivated by the lack of a comprehensive Turkish study centered on the model and SCG's need, under the Presidency of Religious Affairs, for a preventive and developmental framework. The study employs a theoretical, interpretive design. Textual reading, systematic literature review, and content analysis were applied to Clinebell's primary works, selected secondary sources, and the academic literature on SCG in Türkiye. Findings were structured through a comparative reading of Clinebell's approach and SCG practices; no quantitative field data were collected, but practice examples were examined as illustrative cases and program outlines. Results suggest that the model is applicable in Türkiye. Relationship-centered and action-oriented interventions, viewing crises as developmental opportunities, and "growth groups" may strengthen SCG practice. The multidimensional developmental framework and the theological grounding that prioritizes a salutogenic understanding of religion support preventive and developmental programs attentive to religious sensitivities; the measured use of prayer, sacred text reading, and rituals supports principled practice. Overall, the thesis offers a systematic synthesis and localization proposals. It recommends adding growth-focused modules to staff training and supervision, piloting group-based preventive programs in Familiy Centers, and structuring volunteer support networks. Limitations include reliance on texts and secondary sources and the absence of large-sample field data and impact analyses, limiting generalizability. Future work should develop measurement tools, conduct longitudinal evaluations, and perform impact analyses across institutional settings.
