Gender elements in literature translations for children

This thesis study deals with the effects and reflections of gender on translated children literature. Children literature plays an important role in shaping gender norms and children identity development. The current study aims to understand how translated children literature products contribute to or reinforce gender norms and how children perceive or learn these norms. The intersection of gender roles (girls being forced to wear pink, boys to wear blue, etc.), which are frequently encountered in local children literature, and translated children literature are a matter of curiosity. In order to understand the effects of gender elements on translated children literature and to see how they shape children's gender identities, a comparative English-Turkish examination of selected translated children literature products will be an important step. In addition, presenting the factors that direct translated children literature, looking at gender roles and norms specifically for children, and the imposition/teaching of these roles on children from an early age through children literature, with various examples and product reviews, will also show how much the expressions used interact with life. The aim of the study is to reveal the presence of gender elements in translated children literature. The examples used in this context include 6 novels and 3 fairy tales. Novels were selected based on the 7-14 age group, and fairy tales were selected based on the 5-7 age group. The method of the study is document analysis. Original English and Turkish translations of the products are used. The sentences will be included in the study in tables, comparatively and with explanations.
