Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research is to determine and examine the value transfer elements in children's books. It is aimed to determine the effectiveness of these books in terms of values education by doing examinations about what the moral values intended to be transferred to children or transferred unintentionally are, how often and how much they take place. For this purpose, library lists were obtained from 10 secondary schools selected from the cities of Balıkesir, Sivas, Kilis and Konya. Of the books common among these, 25 works by native and 25 by foreign authors were selected for examination. In addition, it was aimed to benefit from the opinions of Turkish teachers about values education and the books in question. For this purpose, interviews were conducted with 22 Turkish teachers working in Balıkesir. In the first dimension of the research, scanning model was used to examine the characteristics of children's books taught in secondary schools in terms of value transfer. The phenomenology model was preferred in order to determine the opinions of Turkish teachers on values education, which constitute the second dimension of the study. During the examination of the works, the "Value Transfer Evaluation Form" developed by the researcher was used. In the development of the form, the core values (justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, respect, love, responsibility, patriotism, benevolence) in the 2019 Turkish Curriculum were taken into account. A semi-structured interview form was used to obtain the opinions of Turkish teachers. It was noted which value expression was on which page among the works and shared in the findings. According to the results obtained, it was determined that the most common value in domestic and foreign works examined was love, and the least frequent value was justice. Differences were determined between the works of Turkish and foreign authors in terms of patriotism and respect values while it was concluded that they were close to each other in terms of other values. According to the findings obtained from the interviews, it was concluded that the teachers believed in the importance of children's books in values education and they took this into consideration when choosing books for the libraries.
