Evaluation of clinical and radiographic records of the first permanent molar teeth in children: A retrospective study

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the general health status, treatment needs, the presence of interventional and preventive treatment and the post-treatment prognosis of the first permanent molar teeth. Material and methods: The collection of data required for this study was organized according to a case-control (retrospective) research method and the data were collected by a single investigator. In our study, panoramic radiographs and clinical follow-up records scanned before for another reason of randomly selected patients who had applied to the Department of Pedodontics between the years of 2011 and 2016 in Malatya, Inonu University Dentistry Faculty Department of Pedodontics were used. Results: The restorative, endodontic and surgical treatment needs of the first permanent molar teeth and the interventional treatments applied to these teeth were found to be higher in the lower jaw than the upper jaw (p<0.001). The upper jaw has more unerupted teeth than the lower jaw. Statistically significant differences were found between the females and males (p<0.001) in terms of application of flor, fissure sealant and restorative treatment, but there was no statistically significant difference between males and females in terms of root treatment and application of extraction (p>0.05). The ratio of healthy first permanent molars decreases with age. The most restorative and endodontic treatment needs are found in the age range of 8-12 years. Conclusion: The first permanent molar teeth are not given sufficient importance, because of being the first permanent teeth, the low awareness of the parents in this regard and the inadequate oral care of the children. Accordingly, the decay of these teeth and interventional treatments have a high prevalence and this is often the case. Key Words: First permanent molar tooth, permanent tooth, tooth decay.
