The effectiveness of training given to parents by the nurse on correct use of inhaler medication in child patients

Aim: This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of training given by the nurse on the use of inhaler devices to parents of children of 0-18 age group who were admitted to the Allergy Polyclinic of Nevvar-Salih İşgören Children's Hospital at the Medical Faculty Hospital of Dokuz Eylül University, who were diagnosed with respiratory system disease, and who used inhaler medication. Materials and Methods: The study data were collected using a socio-demographic data form, which was developed by the researcher under the literature, and the Inhaler Medication Use Skills Chart, which was prepared based on the Turkish Thoracic Society National Asthma Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines. This quasi-experimental study was conducted between 01 January 2015 and 31 March 2015. The data obtained through the questionnaires administered to 200 parents were analyzed using the SPSS 22.00 statistical software package. Results: The inhaler device used by the children of the parents enrolled in the study was found to affect the need for medication use skills training. The highest need for training before the skills training was found to be in parents of the children using MDI, while it was determined in parents of the children using the diskus device after the skills training. In the scoring performed after skills training, the mean skills scores for using the devices were found to be as follows: 7.78 ± 0.75 for diskus, 8.00 ± 0.75 for turbuhaler; 8.69 ± 1.07 for MDI, and 8.29 ± 0.95 for nebulizer. Conclusion: In our study, the correct use and control of inhaler devices were found to increase after the skills training for correct inhaler device use given to parents.
