The effect of external cold and vibration used on the pain, fear and anxiety during the immunization of children

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of external cooling and vibration used during the vaccination application of children on pain, fear and anxiety. The research is a randomized controlled study. The universe of research consisted of the primary school 1st grade students to be vaccinated with DaBT-IPA which rapel dose (0.5 ml, IM) within the scope of Şehitkamil Community Health Center's school vaccination days between the dates of 03.09.2019-30.09.2019 and the sample of the research consisted of 90 students determined by power analysis ( experimental: 45, control:45). A cold application and vibrating device (Buzzy®-external cold and a vibrating Device) which was used in experimental group was leaved in the area of injection before vaccination application for 30 seconds. After that it was situated to above the Buzzy injection area and leaved in this area along the injection. No intervention was made to the children in the control group during the injection. The injection was applied to the experimental and control groups by the same nurse. Children's pain, fear, and anxiety were evaluated by child and the nurse administering the vaccine. İn research, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups of children WBFPRS, nurse WBFPRS, nurse CFS, children CSA ve nurse CSA scores (p<0.005), there was no statistically significant difference inthe children's CFS score (p>0.005). During vaccination, external cooling and vibration were found to be effective on children's pain and anxiety. It is recommended to use to external cooling and vibration method which is, easy to apply and has non-pharmacologial advantage in health institutions since it reduces the pain and anxiety levels of children during vaccination.
